President Biden is hosting 49 African leaders in Washington, DC on December 13-15, 2022, for the U.S.-Africa Leaders’ Summit.
According to the US Department of State, the Summit will demonstrate “the United States enduring commitment to Africa and increased cooperation on Share global priorities”.
“Africa will shape the future — not just the future of the African people, but of the world. Africa will make the difference in tackling the most urgent challenges and seizing the opportunities we all face», US President Joe Biden said in a statement.
The summit’s three-day agenda will kick off with the African and Diaspora Young Leaders Forum and will feature breakout sessions on higher education, the creative industries, and environmental equity, utilizing the theme ‘‘Amplifying Voices: Building Partnerships That Last.’
The 2022 U.S.-Africa Business Forum (USABF) will take place on the Summit’s second day. The USABF will focus on advancing two-way trade and investment partnerships that bolster Africa’s role in the global economy, scale innovation and entrepreneurship, and drive advancements in key sectors.
There will be also a session on “Supporting Conservation, Climate Adaptation, and the Just Energy Transition”.
US President Joe Biden is expected to back the African Union seat in G20.
“We need more African voices in international conversations that concern the global economy, democracy, and governance, climate change, health, and security,” said Judd Devermont, senior director for African affairs at the National Security Council.
The first US-Africa summit was hosted in 2014 by then-president Barack Obama.
Experts say the US is interested in fostering stronger relationships with Africa, which will make up a quarter of the world’s population by 2050. Its working population will grow by 20 million per year over the next 20 years.
