United Nations calls for safe passage of humanitarian aid to the Tigray Region

The United Nations called on Friday on all parties to allow the immediate and safe passage of humanitarian personnel and supplies to the Tigray Region to make sure we can reach all people who need assistance.

During a press briefing held at UN Geneva, the spokesperson for the United Nations OCHA, Jens Laerke, said the UN is alarmed by the continued reports of civilians being injured and killed during fighting in rural areas of Tigray.

‘We are deeply concerned about the plight of hundreds of thousands of people who have still not received assistance in Tigray more than two and a half months since the conflict began”, he said.

Mr. Laerke added that humanitarian relief operations continue to be constrained by the lack of full, safe, and unhindered access to Tigray caused by both insecurity and bureaucratic obstacles imposed by federal and regional authorities.

Laerke says U.N. and private agencies have managed to deliver aid in some areas, mainly in the cities. However, he says the number reached is far below the estimated 2.3 million people in need of assistance.

The armed conflict in November 2020 in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, between the Tigray Regional Government, led by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed -led government forces.
