Tunisia has categorically stated dividing Libya is unacceptable- President Kais Saied said this in Paris along with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron.
Addressing a joint media conference after talks with the French President, he said the temporary legitimacy cannot continue in Libya.
“The authorities in Tripoli are based on international legitimacy, but this legitimacy cannot continue and in its place, a new legitimate government should come and that legitimate government should be born out of the will of the Libyan people”.
President Saied also said, “And, I will say from this podium, in Paris, that Tunis will not accept the division of Libya”.
Libya has been divided between rival factions and their administrations in the East and West of the country, supported by various armed groups aligned to various governments.
‘Fulfil commitments’
French and Tunisian Presidents have asked all the parties in Libya to fulfil their commitments and restart negotiations under the aegis of the UN.
Libya is in a state of Turmoil for over nine years, since its leader Muammar Gaddafi was toppled with the backing of NATO, who was subsequently killed.
Speaking at the media conference along with the Tunisian President, Emmanuel Macron said “France and Tunisia together demand that the warring parties ceasefire and keep their commitment to resume negotiations within the UN framework”.
The French President also revealed he had a talk with President RecepTayyip Erdogan about Turkey’s role in Libya.
Meanwhile, Libya and Tunisia have resumed trading operations, allowing cargo trucks to transport goods across the border via Ras Ijder, which was suspended due the Covid-19 pandemic.
