A 34-year-old South African who wowed viewers of a popular British TV talent show was hailed by the judging panel as "by far the best opera singer" to ever grace the stage.
Exuberant Innocent Masuku showed up for his striking performance as the closing act of the second round of auditions for Britain's Got Talent (BGT).
The show features all sorts of talents, from singers and dancers to comedians and magicians who are not just from the United Kingdom.
Despite the name, Britain's Got Talent is open to a wider range of contestants—people from all over the world are welcome to apply and there have been many successful international acts on the show since it started in 2007.
Very special
Innocent Masuku, who lives in London, took to the stage in his plain African-style top, which he revealed was made by his mother.
"You look amazing," commented judge Amanda Holden, drawing a cheer of appreciation from the crowd.
When asked if he thought he could win, Innocent simply replied, "Well, let's find out." And he proceeded to deliver a stunning performance, singing the Italian opera song Caruso by Lucio Dalla with perfect control and emotion.
The audience gasped in disbelief at his powerful tenor voice, and the judges were effusive in their praise. "It was very very special," said Italian judge Bruno Tonioli. "You are special."
But it was Amanda Holden who delivered the highest compliment, stating, "Hands down, in these 17 years that we've been doing Britain's Got Talent, you are by far the best opera singer we have ever had."
Golden Buzzer
Masuku received this accolade with a humble gesture, then shared a surprising revelation. "You won't get far with opera," he disclosed, referring to past discouragement he'd received.
Judge Simon Cowell, addressing the anonymous doubter, declared, "I hope this idiot is watching this right now. Because that was wonderful."
While Innocent did not receive the coveted golden buzzer, which would have sent him straight to the finals, he seemed unfazed, certainly not anticipating that viewers would take to social media to express their frustration that he was denied this honour.
The singer—currently performing as Count Almaviva in the TV series Barber of Seville—displayed nothing but grace.
Masuku’s story showcases the triumph of a young South African over doubt in the pursuit of his passion. An inspirational story.
Perhaps, the only approval he truly needed was that of his mother, the creator of his unique top that seemed to have been a fitting talisman when he stood up there on that stage.
