Pope Francis announced on Sunday a consistory for the creation of 13 new cardinals. The news was made public to the faithful present in St Peter’s Square as well as to those connected throughout the world after the recitation of the Angelus.
On 28 November, there will be 13 new additions to the College of Cardinals: 9 are under 80 years of age, among them is the Archbishop of Kigali -Rwanda, Mgr Antoine Kambanda.
Nine of the new Cardinals are younger than 80 and therefore, have the right to participate in a future conclave. Four others are older than 80 years of age.
Cardinals wear the color red which indicates their willingness to sacrifice themselves usque ad sanguinis effusionem, that is, to the point of shedding their own blood, in the service of the Successor of Peter,.
Antoine Kambanda was ordained a priest in Kabgayi by Pope John Paul II On 8 September 1990.
He was named Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kigali on 11 November 2018.
