The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Bola Ahmed Tibubu president-elect after elections disputed by main opposition parties.
The INEC said Tinubu, the former governor of Lagos state got 37% of the vote, followed by his main challenger Atiku Abubakar who polled 29%, and Peter Obi got 25%.
Opposition parties rejected the results describing the poll as a sham.
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Tinubu called for reconciliation.” Let us team up together. It is the only nation we have”, he said
Tinubu, candidate of the ruling party All Progressives Congress based his campaign on his record of rebuilding the biggest city, Lagos when he was governor.
“My track record should speak for me. Look at Lagos: Before I came, we had dead bodies on the road, a chaotic traffic system, and robbery daytime, and nighttime,” he told reporters.
The 70-year-old politician was nicknamed the «godfather” and used his powerful network to back candidates for Lagos’s top office.
He came into the political arena 30 years ago and was elected governor of Lagos when military rule ended in 1999. He bowed out as the Governor of Africa’s biggest city in 2007.
