Malawi’s newly elected President Lazarus Chakwera has promised to reduce presidential powers.
Addressing a gathering at his inauguration ceremony, President Chakwere told the gathering he was ready to face questions in parliament as part of his efforts to end what he called ‘years of misgovernance’ in Malawi. “I will go to parliament to face questions from people about my handling of state affairs,” he said further”, he said.
The President promised to kick-start the Access to Information Bill and consult the leader of opposition once in three months to discuss national issues. “I promise to set a good example of submitting myself to the constitutional process, provisions, and institutions. This means that as required by law, I will make a full declaration of my assets each year”, added the newly elected president.
The era of secrecy in Malawi will end Dr. Chakwera told the gathering and the nation. He also indicated that freebies will be a thing of the past.
“I will urge the leadership of the judiciary to do more to root out the culture of corruption and selective justice that has shipwrecked too many of our lower courts” he added.
Institutions like the parliament and the anti-corruption bureau will be empowered to operate independently he told the nation during his inauguration.
His inaugural ceremony was scaled down close to a hundred people due to the Covid-19 crisis.
