The rescheduled Tokyo Olympic Games are likely to be a pared-down version, the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) chairman said today.
A simplified or a scaled-down of the games now seems inevitable. JOC Chairman Yasuhiro Yamashita said on Tuesday the organizers have been discussing to simplify the event since it was postponed from this year.
The 32nd summer Olympics was scheduled to begin in 10 day’s time from today, but Covid-19 forced it to be rescheduled to next year starting 23 July next year.
“The Games (used to be) gorgeous and extravagant, which I experienced before” Yamashita- 1984 Los Angles Olympics in Judo-Open category- said at the JOC headquarters.
Tokyo will be hosting the Olympics for the second time, 57 years later after it hosted it first in 1964, which radically transformed the country.
Fund crunch
Next year’s Olympic Games will be “the most innovative ever organized and will rest on three fundamental principles to transform the world: striving for your personal best (achieving your personal best); accepting on another (unity in diversity); and passing on a legacy for the future(connecting tomorrow)” according to tokyo2020.org
Yamashita was appointed JOC chairman in June last year after his predecessor Tsuneazu Takeda was accused of corruption charges. He is being investigated now.
“In regards to the next fiscal year the financial situation of JOC will be quite tough, I think that we may have to consider borrowing money,” Yamashita said.
