Corneille Nangaa, the former president of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has made a surprising move by aligning himself with the M23 rebel group to oppose President Felix Tshesekedi’s administration.
In a press conference held in Nairobi, Kenya, Corneille Nangaa, who currently leads the political party “Action for Dignity of Congo and its People” (ADCP), officially introduced a new coalition called the “Congo River Alliance.” This coalition unites approximately 17 rebel groups from both South Kivu and North Kivu regions.
Mr. Corneille Nangaa, who is running for the presidency in the upcoming December 20th election, described the entire electoral process as an “electoral coup d’État.”
He previously served as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) from 2015 to 2021 and is currently under US sanctions due to allegations of “persistent corruption” associated with the December 2018 elections.
