Diego Maradona, one of the greatest soccer players of all time, died at his home in Argentina after suffering a heart attack at the age of 60.
He led Argentina to win the 1986 World Cup scoring the famous ‘Hand of God’ goal against England in the quarterfinals and took the Italian Napoli team to two Serie A titles.
Maradona was a uniquely gifted player and charismatic figure in the football industry. He scored 34 goals in 91 appearances for Argentina, representing them in four World Cups.
Maradona had recently battled health issues and underwent emergency surgery for a subdural hematoma several weeks ago.
He retired from professional football in 1997, on his 37th birthday and he died 15 years to the day after another troubled but talented football folk hero, George Best.
Declaring three days of national mourning, Alberto Fernandez, the president of Argentina, said: “You took us to the top of the world. You made us immensely happy. You were the greatest of them all.
