The body of Ghana International footballer Christian Atsu was flown back to Accra on Sunday. He was found dead under the rubble of his home in Antakya, Hatay, two weeks after the Turkey earthquake
Atsu, 31, had been playing for Hatayspor and had scored the winning goal in a Feb. 5 Super Lig match.
He was due to fly to England but stayed to celebrate the win, Hatayspor’s manager said on Friday.
“We will not forget you, Atsu. Peace be upon you, beautiful person”, tweeted his club, Hatayspor.
Draped in Ghana’s national flag, Atsu’s coffin was received at Accra’s Kotoko International Airport by Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia.
“We extend our sincere condolences to the entire family for their loss. I want to say that the State will be fully involved with the family in providing him ab befitting burial”, Bawumia, said
Atsu had spells with the UK Premier League sides Everton, Chelsea, and Newcastle.
He won 65 caps for Ghana and helped them to reach the 2015 African Cup of Nations final.
More than 40,000 people were killed in southern Turkey and northern Syria in the earthquake.
