“I have resigned as a member of the reddit board, I have urged them to fill my seat with a black candidate, I will use future gains on my Reddit stock to serve the black community, chiefly to curb racial hate and I am starting with a pledge of $1M” said a passionate tweet from Alexis Ohanian.
The co-founder of Reddit, stepped down from the board on Friday (5.6.20), amidst sorrow, support soared for George Floyd-an unarmed black man who was strangled to death by a white police officer in Minneapolis in the US- as protests continue against his killing.
In his announcement to quit, Ohanian said that he believed his resignation can actually be an act of leadership from people in power right now. He further said, “To everyone fighting to fix our broken nation: do not stop”.
Many tech companies in the US have come under criticism for not having enough black people on board and Ohanian’s resignation may lead to many others quitting senior roles paving way for multi-ethnic people to hold posts high up in the ladder.
Alexis Ohanian has been pragmatic in his tweet, “I’m saying this as a father who needs to be able to answer his black daughter when she asks: What did you do?”
Husband of Tennis legend Serena Williams, Ohanian said he took the decision of quitting this for him, his family and his country.
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said the company would honour his request and bring in a black member on the board.
Ohanian stepped down from his daily duties in 2018, but kept his place on the board of Reddit.
